How the rankings work

A community ranking built from actual match results, with transparent skill and activity rules.

The homepage shows the current season. Regulation archives are published at /leaderboards, and each new season resets Elo to 1500 without erasing career history.

1,500 starting Elo · K 32

E = 1 / (1 + 10((opponent − player) / 400))

Current Elo after = Current Elo before + 32 × (result − E)

Ranking Elo = 1,500 + (Current Elo − 1,500) × 0.96max(0, missed periods − 4)

Win = 1 · Tie = 0.5 · Loss = 0. Expected score estimates the result against that opponent: a lower-rated player earns more for an upset, and a favorite earns less for an expected win. The Ranking Elo formula applies only to decay-eligible streaks and is capped at Current Elo.

Selected online results

Administrators select online Play.Limitless VGC tournaments. Raw details, entries and pairings remain stored, including excluded results. Limitless does not expose an authoritative completion flag, so inclusion is an administrator decision.

An international rating pool

Every participant in an included eligible tournament contributes to the internal Elo pool. A Dominican player's result against an international opponent is calculated normally. Only players whose effective country is DO appear in the public ranking.

Stable player identities

Players are identified by their persistent Limitless player ID, never their display name alone. Effective country uses an administrator override when present, otherwise the player's reported country. Names and raw event-time country information are retained.

Current Elo

Current Elo is the skill estimate derived exclusively from match results, starting at 1,500. Every legitimate match changes it immediately. Both players' changes use their pre-match Current Elo and the same K-factor of 32. Ranking Elo never enters these calculations.

Precision and Peak Elo

The database keeps floating-point values. Display rounding never feeds back into a calculation, and there is no Elo floor. Peak Elo is the highest Current Elo actually reached after a rated match; the initial seed does not count as an earned peak. Inactivity never lowers Peak Elo.

Why Ranking Elo is separate

Ranking Elo orders the current leaderboard and adjusts for extended inactivity. Absence affects a player's current standing without pretending it is a match result or direct evidence of reduced skill. Current Elo and match history remain intact.

Establishment requirements

Official numbered ranks require at least 5 rated matches AND 1 qualifying tournaments. Each qualifying tournament requires at least 3 rated matches. Other Dominican players remain visible as Provisional, with progress toward both requirements.

Eligible competition weeks

Weeks run Monday 00:00 to the following Monday 00:00 in America/Santo_Domingo. Only weeks with an eligible included tournament count. Two events in a week are one activity opportunity; a week with no included event penalizes nobody. Players begin activity tracking with their first rated match.

Full and partial participation

Zero rated matches in an eligible week adds one missed period. Between one and 2 matches holds the counter steady without resetting it. At least 3 matches resets it. Matches across that week's events combine for activity, but each qualifying tournament must meet its own minimum.

Week-end decisions, live Elo

Establishment, missed-period counters, decay entry and reactivation are finalized at week end. During an open week, match results update Current Elo and Ranking Elo using the last finalized inactivity adjustment. The first page request, import or rebuild after closure finalizes due weeks before displaying results.

Grace and decay entry

The first 4 fully missed periods have no adjustment. When a streak first exceeds that grace period, an established player with Current Elo of at least 1,700 enters decay. That check happens once per streak. A failed entry check stays failed until qualifying participation resets the streak.

Exponential inactivity adjustment

For eligible streaks, each missed period beyond grace removes 4% of the remaining distance above the 1,500 baseline. The threshold determines entry, not a floor: decay continues if Ranking Elo later falls below it. If partial participation pushes Current Elo below baseline, Ranking Elo is capped at Current Elo so inactivity never gives a boost.

Activity status

Players with no applicable decay remain Active. Eligible streaks beyond grace become Decaying. At 8 missed periods, everyone becomes Inactive regardless of skill or provisional status. Inactive players leave the default ranking but remain searchable with their profiles, Elo, records and history.

Returning to competition

At least 3 rated matches in one activity week reactivates a player when the week closes. Process every match first, then reset the streak and set Ranking Elo to the resulting Current Elo. This restores neither an old rating nor an old rank. Partial returns continue updating skill but retain the inactivity state.

Official ordering

Official ranks include established Dominican players who are Active or Decaying. Order is Ranking Elo, then Current Elo, then rated matches (all descending), followed by stable Limitless player ID ascending. Unrounded values determine order. Search preserves official ranks; provisional and inactive players receive no current number.

Deterministic match history

Rebuilds replay included tournaments by start date and stable Limitless ID, then phase, round, bracket progression, table and stable pairing key. Each match produces two events with pre-match ratings, expected/actual scores, K-factor and before/after Elo. Tournament movement is the sum of its match changes, with no placement bonus.

Bracket and date assumptions

Observed Top Cut labels are ordered T32, T16, T8, T4, T2 within a phase/round. Unknown labels use deterministic keys and generate a review warning. Individual match times are unavailable, so the tournament timestamp is the effective match date and last-played date. Raw timestamps are retained, including their local-day shifts.

Regulations and season boundaries

Skill Elo continues across a regulation change within the same Season; the administrator-owned regulation label does not reset it, and the source format text remains stored. At an explicit Santo Domingo Season boundary, live Skill/Ranking/Peak Elo and activity state restart from 1500 while career RatingEvents remain available. Each Season retains its recorded activity-policy version; newly scheduled Seasons use the current policy. Closed Season × Regulation archives under /leaderboards preserve a complete prefix through the selected final and are regenerated when source or administrator decisions change.

Legitimate head-to-head results only

Normal Swiss, additional Swiss phases, Top Cut and other played brackets are rated when two identifiable opponents have a valid win/loss or tie. Byes, opponent-less automatic losses, double losses, malformed results, missing identities and incomplete pairings remain stored with exclusion reasons and do not affect Elo or activity participation.
